Here's a sneak preview of the sleeve of my next vinyl outing, due for release in September. It's a 7" various artists EP featuring 19 bands, so as you can imagine the sound quality is going to be astounding.

just a minute.png

Sadly, they've got both the song title and band name wrong. It should of course be "I.W.I.S.H.I.W.A.S.Gay (Beat Me With Your Penis)" by the New Royal Family versus Alexander's Festival Hall featuring Eddie Argos. I mean, what's the point of cajoling a bona fide Top 41 recording star to shout on one of your records if his name's not in big shiny letters on the sleeve, eh?

Still, nice pins.

I walked, I jumped, I ran, I flew
Right off the ground to float to you
There's no gravity that can hold me down for real.

In a week, there's the midterm exams. I don't know why, but I didn't seem nervous as I did before. Well, I AM nervous, but it's not as if I didn't learn anything at all.

Went home late from school. My Constitutional Law class for Tuesday is only an hour, so I had a LOT of time to study afterwards. My goal is to memorise up to 15 articles. And I'm really up to that challenge. I didn't remember what article I last read, but I'm certain I went past my limit.

[info]nadineheather--thanks for the emails--thank you for making me sane these past few weeks. I lost track of who I was, and I don't know why. Maybe out of fear, and out of a million insecurities. Don't ask what they are, it'll take forever to explain. But thank you, thank you! I just hope and pray that things will be okay with your sister. And that your mum will be better.

I will get things sorted for exams next week. Then start on the letter journal.

EMERGENCY!

Does anyone have a copy of The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera that they can lend me?

My council's libraries have one copy, which is on loan and already has two reservations on it.

I am currently reading (very good!) A Fine Balance (Rohinton Mistry). Next ones are The War of the Worlds (HG Wells) and The Truth (Terry Pratchett again. He has a lot in the list) which will take me a couple of weeks but then I'll run out of books and I don't want to read the next one up the BIg Read 2003 list as then the WHOLE SYSTEM will be RUINED!

So I am now the proud owner of that Select Magazine cassette from '94 with the piano version of The Living Dead. I'd really rather be able to listen to it on mp3, as it's just easier and all and I don't trust the cassette to not get mangled. Does anyone have an mp3 file they can share? Pretty please? I did look online first but the only link I could find was for the wrong file. I'd be eternally grateful :)

hey-ya.

You Are An Apple Tree

You are quiet and shy at times, but you have lots of charm and appeal.

You are quite attractive: your pleasant attitude, flirtatious smile, and adventurous spirit draw people in.

Sensitive and loyal in love, you want to love and be loved.

You are a faithful and tender partner - who is generous in sharing your many talents.

You love children, and you need an affectionate partner.

cos everyone knows the best apples are at the top of the tree and they're the hardest to reach.

so.....go figure?

i got my editor's letter finished, and i've emailed it to daryl for him to look over and tell me it's QUITE POSSIBLY THE BEST THING HE'S EVER READ!

i guess that might be irrelevant. but after i've heard back from him about it, i'll share it here so youse guise can compare it to matt mallard's.

[Current Music |loudermilk - "anthema"]

oh good lord.

When Hayley and I sat down with the three, new editors to begin our year long process of developing Lights & Shadows, I mainly wanted two things: first—to keep our pizza off the leaning tower of submissions, and second—I wanted a diverse magazine. It was no secret that Hayley and I had different tastes and interests when it came to literature, but knowing this, I wanted to use these contrasting opinions to create a magazine as wildly varied as it was good. I wanted to show every facet of the wide array of talent we have here at UNA.

Coming off the success and humbling acceptance of the magazine in the past couple of years, Hayley and I naturally only wanted to continue honoring the reputation of the magazine and our beloved school. But just as it goes with trying to recreate the magic of opening night or the success of a certain chocolate-chip cookie recipe, all we can do each time is wipe our utensils clean and start fresh with what we have. We tried to ignore the copy of last year’s magazine staring over our shoulder from its spotless, golden-gilded display case on the shelf behind us, in order to trudge forward and create something new, substantial, truthful, and wholly-representative of what we felt captured the essence and color of our surroundings. This, I believe, we have accomplished.

Thanks to Hayley, Trey, J.T., and Amber for all your hard work, deliberate intent, and honest criticism, never backing down and fighting for what you liked—and against what you didn’t like, even if it was in vain. And thanks to Daryl, for your relaxed good-nature, always supplying us with the right amount of guidance and help when needed, and letting us run the show unless it got too crazy. Thanks to all the writers, and most importantly, thanks to you the reader!

Pierre de Ronsard once wrote, “And you must not worry, as I’ve said so many times, about the opinions that people might have of your writing, keeping as a firm rule that it is better to be in the service of truth than in the service of opinion.” We live in a country where we have been blessed with the right to say what we want without fear of persecution. And as artists, let us never forget how important this gift is, the ability to write and create what is truth.

Happy Reading!
-Matt Mallard

On Saturday I went to see Frank Sidebottom at the Bull and Gate. It was a strange experience.

I remember seeing him on telly years ago (in the early 90s? Or earlier?) and also I think he was in a comic strip in Oink. This was a kid's version of Viz which was published in the 80s and which I really liked.

But then on Saturday, it was really odd because I didn't 'get' any of it, didn't find anything funny and couldn't understand the audience. They were very scary! It was Frank Sidebottom's night, with other acts chosen by him, and when these poor sods were on, there were scary blokes shouting stuff like 'F*****g get Frank back on you c***s!'. Which I thought seemed A) a bit heavy for a comedy night and B) hard to understand as Frank didn't seem any funnier than the other people.

I kept asking people to explain what was funny. The bloke on the merchandise stall said it was funny because it was silly. 'But I like Vic and Bob', I said, 'Why don't I understand this?'
I suggested maybe it was because I'm not from oop North, there was a joke I was missing. But then, I like John Shuttleworth, and he's got that whimsical Northern thing down pat, and I understand that.

Normally I think I've got quite a good sense of humour. It is very strange to be in a room of people baying for a comic who gives you no idea why they are doing that!

Mrs Beckham revealed earlier this year that she felt that wearing high heels boosted her brain power, because she simply could not concentrate in flat shoes.

She added that she avoided working out because she could not bear to be in trainers.

'I'd love to go to the gym, but I just can't get my head around the footwear.'

i can't get my head around this.

i read the wikipedia entry for her last night or the night before last, i don't quite remember, but i remarked to brandy how anyone can think this woman is relevant.

[Current Music |The Gallant Forty Twa]

Took the folks on a yomp across the Heath yesterday. Pergola to Kenwood house via the Spaniards, then winding down back to Archway. A beautiful day.

In the evening they took us to see Black Watch at the Barbican which appears to be the hottest ticket in town. The audience was far more star-studded than the cast, featuring as it did Kevin Spacey, John Cleese, Juliet Stevenson, Suede biographer David Barnett and the violinist from the New Royal Family, to name but a lot. Crivvens.

The play, though, was magnificent. It was more like a ballet really, kind of Crouching Tiger meets Trainspotting via Apocalypse Now with extra swearing. They should put that on the poster.

Turns out my great grandfather was in the Black Watch. He only cried twice in his life: once when his wife died, and the other time when he first got lice in his kilt in the trenches. I obviously didn't inherit his bravery genes. I cried at Titanic. What a poof.
